About VIN Lookup and This Report

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle. It encodes the manufacturer, country of assembly, vehicle type, model year, plant, and production sequence — functioning as a permanent fingerprint for the vehicle.

How does VIN decoding work?

Each position in a VIN corresponds to a specific data point. Positions 1–3 identify the manufacturer (WMI), positions 4–8 describe vehicle attributes (VDS), position 9 is a check digit, and positions 10–17 identify the specific vehicle (VIS) including model year and production sequence.

What does this report include?

Vehicle specifications from NHTSA's vPIC system, open safety recalls from the NHTSA Recalls API, reported safety complaints from the NHTSA Complaints database, fuel economy from the US DOE, VIN structure analysis, and optionally public market listing history.
